Welcome to My Blog

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” -Dr. Seuss

My initial thought about using web technologies in the library was to go  for it. The more that I can push the library into the 21st century, the more relevant and current the library will stay. There are several roadblocks that became more and more obvious the more I thought about it though. When dealing with elementary students ranging from the ages of 5-11, there are several federal laws that need to be followed to protect the students. The technology skills of these age ranges are also a challenge that needs to be remembered. However, if I look past those two issues. There are ways and technologies out there that I can utilize in the classroom.

I would like to start a library website that students will be able to post and reply to each other. My first thought is to create a Google Site, since my district uses the Google Suite of tools. The students all have individual accounts and it would seem to be a seamless transition. I would incorporate this technology during the students check out time. It would initially not be part of my lesson, but an extension of the students free 10 minutes in the library. I would give students the chance to write reviews about the books they read, and potentially create short book review videos on  Flipgrid and post them on the Site. I would like to have them displayed on the two TV’s located in the Library, so it would give students from other grades and classes to see what their fellow peers were reading. I have solid ideas, now time will tell if I can successfully implement them or not.

  1. Lauren, I think this is a fantastic idea! Having the reviews on the TV will be so empowering for those authors! I can really see them becoming excited and engaged to not only read, but create the reviews as well. I sure hope you can get this rolling!

  2. Lauren – I feel you last comment in the post too. Time limitations always seems to scratch my plans too. We never seem to ever have enough time without giving something up. I really like your idea of having the reviews of books read playing on the televisions. Personally I always look at Goodreads reviews before renting or buying a book, so I think that could draw in other students who may be hesitant to reading. Do you think you would give students access to administer the website too, or would monitor it all yourself since it is elementary?

  3. Lauren, your planned use of technology in the library is very intriguing. I can envisions students sharing their excitement or disappointments about a book using flipgrid. Writing reviews of a book is a great way for young students to practice putting their thoughts into clear writing. I love the ideas you shared. I used flipgrid as a colleague collaboration tool this year. It could be a fun tool for students to use as a way to share their thoughts about a presentation as well. Thanks for sharing the idea!

  4. Lauren,
I believe that your mindset is the proper way to address the inevitable change related to the implementation of technology into education. Those who are reluctant to accessing its potential are doing their students an injustice. It provides an endless amount of resources that can be used to aide instruction and promote authentic learning. Having your students take place in an activity similar to one that was described above will encourage students to take control of their learning and pursue personal interest.

  5. I want to be in your library class. It would be so worthwhile to integrate technology into library studies. the kids need to know how to do these things and sometimes, time in the classroom is sparse. I never heard of FlipGrid, but will be checking that out! Thanks for sharing.
